Some people ride roller coasters to feel alive. I read stories like that one. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eI have never been suicidal. I\x26#8217;ve always imagined that level of depression to be a few rungs below mine, like a wide, black chasm that people don\x26#8217;t get out of. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eBut I guess some people do. They survive their suicide attempts and never go back. Yet there are still more people who survive, only to fall back into the chasm again. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eI understand suicide. I\x26#8217;ve felt hopeless and unloved. While I never got very close to the very bottom, I saw it and I had no trouble imagining myself getting helpless enough to try it. I wasn\x26#8217;t one of the poor souls jumping in, but they all reminded me of me. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eMy therapist has a sign in his office: \x26#8220;Don\x26#8217;t believe everything you think.\x26#8221;\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eTo people thinking about suicide, remember that. Your brain is playing tricks on you. It will set you off on a spiral that goes deep, so deep you might even consider killing yourself. Along the way to that horrible end, you\x26#8217;ll have thoughts like \x26#8220;nobody loves me\x26#8221; and \x26#8220;my life is meaningless\x26#8221; and \x26#8220;I have nothing to live for.\x26#8221; These are all lies that a depressed mind tells itself. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eDepression functions a bit like cancer - it\x26#8217;s your own body turned against you. Big chunks of you turn black and start trying to drag you down into the worst pain and suffering you\x26#8217;ve ever felt. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eJust like there\x26#8217;s no single cure for cancer, there\x26#8217;s nothing that will cure your depression. Fixing you will be a process led by experts and doctors who will try different medicines and therapies. If one thing doesn\x26#8217;t work, they\x26#8217;ll try something else. As long as you\x26#8217;re still alive, they will never stop trying to save you.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eBut unlike cancer, your survival rate is 100%. \x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eIf you never try to kill yourself, depression can never kill you.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x0a\x3cp\x3eI don\x26#8217;t hit those depths very often anymore.
